Ayako Yamazaki (violin) Kiyo Takahashi (piano): Bristol Cathedral
CONTINUING the Anglo-Japanese connection, yesterday's recital presented the combination of this duo for the first time at this venue.
They brought a programme of varied music from Mozart to Ravel which was full of excellence.
They opened with Mozart's Violin Sonata no 18 in G Major. This is in only two movements and has a delicate opening before the work becomes more powerful and both players have plenty to do.
Foregoing the usual slow movement the allegretto is a lively dance with many technical difficulties for the violinist particularly and both members showed their considerable talent.
In Szymanowski's Narcisse the pianist starts with a discordant tune before the violin enters on the higher register with a sorrowful theme and there are many variations before the piece dies away.
The well- known Spanish Dance by De Falla was well received mainly because it was probably the only familiar work in the programme.
Ravel's Sonata in G Major is the second written for this combination and was first heard in 1927. The playing was carefully presented and very well balanced.
The duo produced impressive and beautiful variations of tone and colour throughout this excellent recital.
